NESREA DG Urges Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria to Champion Sustainable Practices in the Industry Sector

The Director General of NESREA, Dr. Innocent Barikor has urged members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) to be at the forefront of efforts to promote best practices in the manufacturing sector.

Speaking at a One Day Strategic Dialogue Session for Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN) held Tuesday in Lagos, Dr. Barikor said MAN was well positioned to bring the needed vigour to ensure the success of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programme by leading the industry in adopting best practices and securing a sustainable future for the manufacturing sector.

Discussing Efficient Waste Management in the Industrial Sector- The Catalytic Role of Regulatory Agency and Manufacturers, the NESREA DG disclosed that subscribing to the EPR Programme was mandatory for all manufacturers, and pointed out that, “by facilitating the establishment of Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs), MAN can ensure that the manufacturing sector moves towards a more circular economy, where waste is minimized, and resources are efficiently utilized.”

“Promoting a culture of accountability and environmental responsibility within its membership can ensure that sharp practices are addressed and overall compliance is improved. MAN can lead efforts to combat like illegal dumping and improper handling of hazardous waste, safeguarding both the environment and public health.”

He further submitted that as an umbrella body, the onus was on MAN to advocate for the treatment of effluents before discharge and ensuring the regular submission of essential documents such as Environmental Audit Reports, Environmental Management Plans, and monitoring data.

At meeting were the Executive Director of Sustainable Research and Action for Environmental Development (SRADev Nigeria), Dr. Leslie Adogame and the Director General of the Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria, Mr. Segun Ajayi-Kadir.
