Media Dialogue on Circular Economy
“Nigeria already reaping the gains of Circular Economy ” – DG NESREA
The Director General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Dr. Innocent Barikor has revealed that Nigeria is enjoying the benefits of the implementation of the Circular Economy Model in the Country.
Speaking virtually at the Dialogue, Dr. Barikor shared insights on Nigeria’s circular economy journey stating that the model is being implemented in the country through the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Programme.
He said the Battery, Food and Beverage, Electrical/ Electronics and Used Tyres sectors had come under the program with all manufacturers, producers and importers mandated to register with their respective Producer Responsibility Organisations.
Dr. Barikor restated the commitment of Nigeria to the success of Circular Economy, “The Federal Government is developing policies, programs, and partnerships to support the circular economy and is also investing in waste management infrastructure, promoting sustainable agriculture, and encouraging private sector innovation.”
While tasking the media on creating awareness, he went on to add , “Nigeria is already reaping the benefits of circular economy with the green jobs which have been created along the value chain in the different sectors. Gradually, we will all begin to see the reduction in waste and other forms of pollution.”
Highlighting key aspects of the EPR Programme, the Director, Inspection and Enforcement , Mr. Abdulsalam Isa said the model is based on the principle that create a closed-loop system where waste is minimized, and products and materials remain in use for as long as possible.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Director Partnership and Education, Mrs. Bintu Kolo Mohammed pointed out that the National Environmental Regulations had been reviewed to provide the necessary legal backing for the success of the programme.
The European Union Programme Manager for Energy, Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mr. Godfrey Ogbemudia joined the call for media involvement in sensitizing citizens on the programme.
