Learn More About What We Do

As Environmental Operator, NESREA plays a key role in addressing the challenges posed by our natural and built environments, such as floods, erosion, industrial pollution, sanitation and waste management. The Agency is working with various state and local governments to make them better prepared and more resilient to environmental hazards.

NESREA programmes and activities as an environmental Operator include establishment and utilization of National Reference Laboratories in Kano and Port-Harcourt; operation of Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Stations in Abuja and Port-Harcourt.

NESREA has also built partnerships with relevant stakeholders at national, regional and global levels including the Inter-Agency Committee On CITES Enforcement and the sustenance of the National Toxic Waste Dump Watch Programme. The Agency has encouraged environmental volunteerism through her Green Corps Initiative.

The Agency promoted good environmental practices in waste control and tackled the growing problem of high rate of waste generation in urban areas. The agency has continued to tackle the challenge of poor urban waste control through the implementation of demonstration waste control projects. As part of her operational strategies for the demonstration waste control programme, the Agency has embarked on the distribution of three (3) colour-coded waste bins to each household in the project areas in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State and Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Other activities include the training of waste handlers; sensitization of the residents on sorting of waste at source; adoption of the 5Rs (Reduce, Repair, Reuse, Re-cycle, and Recover) and construction of Waste Compost Plants, for the production of manure for gardening and farming.
