Learn More About NESREA

The achievements, programmes and activities of NESREA and her contributions to national development can be categorized below:

NESREA AS ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATOR
NESREA focuses her regulatory work on individuals or organizations whose activities pose threat to the environment.

This is carried out through the development of regulations and standards, and implementation of various environmental enforcement programmes and activities including:

  • Development of Environmental Regulations;
  • Interception and Arrest of Vessels carrying E-waste to Nigeria;
  • Regulating the Telecom Sector;
  • Regulating the Illegal traffic in endangered species of Fauna and Flora; and Lifting of the 6-Year Trade Suspension on Nigeria by the Standing Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES); and
  • Curbing Environmental Degradation by Quarry Operations

NESREA AS ENVIRONMENTAL OPERATOR
NESREA plays a key role in addressing the challenges posed by our natural and built environments, such as floods, erosion, industrial pollution, sanitation and waste management.

The Agency works with various State and Local Governments to make them better prepared and more resilient to environmental hazard.

NESREA builds partnerships with relevant stakeholders at national, regional, and global levels.

The Agency also collects, analyses, stores, and retrieves environmental data and information for input into national planning and development.

The following are some of NESREA programmes and activities as an environmental Operator:

  • Establishment of two National Reference Laboratories;
  • Procurement of Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Stations;
  • The Toxic Waste Dump Watch Programme;
  • The NESREA Green Corps Initiative; and
  • The Inter-Agency Committee On CITES Enforcement

NESREA AS ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISER
NESREA provides expert advice to government, institutions and organizations on environment and environment-related matters.

NESREA provides guidance to business to help promote efficient and sustainable use of natural resources, and minimize negative impacts of business on the environment. Unsustainable consumption and production are inimical to our national development.

In addition, NESREA shares and exchange information with the public including key stakeholders. Such advisory roles are carried out under the following programmes and activities:

  • Cooperation and Partnership with State Governments;
  • Participation in International Meetings and Negotiations;

NESREA AS ENVIRONMENTAL CAPACITY BUILDER
NESREA is cooperating with many development partners and other international organisations for capacity building and human resources development in the area of environmental compliance monitoring and enforcement. This is important for promotion of environmental governance which is key to our national development.

Various capacity building programmes have been carried out within and outside Nigeria to train NESREA staff, and NESREA staff to train other relevant stakeholders, on various aspects of environmental compliance monitoring and enforcement.

The training and retraining (or retooling) of Nigerians in environment and environment-related fields are necessary for our national development and through this process, NESREA is building a critical mass of core environmental experts to support our national development agenda.

NESREA AS ENVIRONMENTAL JOB CREATOR
New and additional jobs are being created since the establishment of NESREA in 2007. The creation of the 6 Zonal Headquarters and 17 State Offices, not only facilitated the speedy emergence of good environmental governance at the state level, but also the creation of employment opportunities for the citizens of the state, thereby reducing social decadence, and empowering the people economically.

New jobs have also been created by the regulated community including industry and business, both in the areas of manufacturing and services. As a result of the enforcement programmes of NESREA, industry and business are becoming more mindful of their corporate social responsibility and their environmental stewardship. They are employing environmental officers in their facilities and creating new jobs for the environmental consultants and various types of green jobs are being created which are eco-friendly and beneficial to our national development.

Other programmes include:
Pilot Programmes and Projects:

  • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR);
  • Compliance Monitoring of Environmental Impacts of Artisanal Mining;
  • Demonstration Waste Control Projects in Port Harcourt and Ado-Ekiti; and
